The classic Gibson SG Standard ’61 is a return to its original configuration as part of the Gibson Original Collection of guitars. Sonically and stylistically, the SG helped pave the road for psychedelic rock, British blues, and hard rock to follow. The Gibson SG remains as a classic guitar to this day and has not gone out of fashion.
As many know, the Gibson SG was initially still a Les Paul model, until Les Paul himself expressed dislike of the drastic changes to the guitar. It became a model of its own in the SG, or “Solid Guitar” and its legacy began famously with early players of the model being George Harrison and Eric Clapton, and the guitarist quite synonymous with the SG – AC/DC’s Angus Young.
In a case of “Ask and you shall receive”, Gibson answered many player requests and the Gibson SG Standard ’61 is a return to true form. After many SG models before this one having extended feature packages such as PCB mounted pots, push/pull coil tap options, and automatic tuners, this SG is back to basics where it all began.
To begin with, the SG Standard ’61 is built around a solid Mahogany body and neck. SGs have long been known for having thinner neck profiles than Les Pauls, and this SG ’61 is no exception, featuring Gibson’s SlimTaper neck profile for speedy runs up and down the fretboard. It is loaded with hand soldered CTS 500K audio taper pots and Orange Drop capacitors for proper volume and tone rolloff, unlocking the full dynamic range of its Burstbucker 61R and 61T humbucking pickups. The SG Standard ’61 also features Kluson style Gibson Deluxe tuners with keystone buttons for a proper vintage look.
