The Gibson Custom Shop is responsible for some of the most accurate recreations of the world’s most coveted vintage guitars. Their innovative design and production processes utilize modern technology while still maintaining a literal “hands on” approach when it comes to building these museum-worthy instruments. Using the highest-grade materials and only the most qualified craftsmen in the biz, the results are nothing short of astonishing, time and time again.
The Gibson Custom ’60 Les Paul Standard Reissue is a six-string force to be reckoned with. Just like its true origin story relatives built over half a decade ago, the painstaking attention to detail in manufacturing is clear, both audibly and visually.
At its core, the ’60 Les Paul Standard Reissue’s body is a solid piece of lightweight mahogany. Its 2-piece figured maple top and its solid mahogany neck are both bound to the body by hide glue, allowing for the best transference of vibration throughout the entire guitar.
The neck shape is one of the most important features of this instrument, as it is sets a standard for the Gibson neck profiles of the ‘60s. Deemed by Gibson the “60s SlimTaper,” it is slick, fast, and also comfortable to grasp for full chords. Atop the neck sits a dark and rich Indian rosewood fingerboard with Gibson’s standard 12” radius and 22 narrow/tall frets. Two unpotted Custombucker Alnico 3 pickups are wound up and ready to spit out the classic undeniable sound of the 60’s, with CTS 500K audio taper bots and paper-in-oil caps under the hood for ultimate output and tone control.
Murphy Lab – Gibson Tomato Soup Burst Finish
In addition to all of the specs that make this guitar a dream to play, it’s important to address why this guitar looks like it could have been manufactured in 1960, played lightly, and then kept underneath a bed. This is all thanks Tom Murphy and Gibson Custom’s Murphy Lab division. After years of research and development, they developed a formula to replicate the properties of Gibson’s original Nitrocellulose lacquer used in the 50s and 60s. This guitar features a light aged Tomato Soup Burst finish, in which you can clearly spot purposeful aging applied to the finish and hardware to make it feel and look like the age of its first ancestor. You’ll find very light wear along the neck, headstock, forearm wear, and finish checking throughout the body. Even the hardware has been lightly aged to bring the worn vintage aesthetic to its full potential.
A guitar built to last a lifetime, and then some, this vintage style ’60 Les Paul Standard Reissue is a prime example of Gibson Custom Guitars artistry and performance. A phenomenal addition to any collection of fine instruments, this electric guitar will forever stand out from the rest, securing a special place in your hands and your gear-driven-heart.
